New Graphic Novel: The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook by Eleanor Davis

By Mary Melaugh, Marshall Middle School LIbrarian

Julian Calendar has grown used to being bullied because of his science smarts. For example, when he makes a fully functional model plane for a class assignment, bullies take it away and fly it into a tree. Julian suffers continuous attacks like these at the hands of less intellectually gifted classmates. A picture of Julian reveals how he has attracted the label of “nerd.” Among other things, he wears white knee socks and giant glasses along with a backpack his mother used when she was in high school.

When his parents announce that they are moving, Julian is thrilled. Even better, they are moving to Mosburg, the town where his hero, the inventor Professor Kablovsky, lived. At his new school, Julian tries to hide his intelligence, so he is stunned when he receives a message using an advanced secret code that turns out to be from the class jock, Ben, and a fierce school rebel, Greta. They invite him to join their secret science club.

In a well-stocked hideout, the young inventors happily collaborate to build things until a notebook containing all their ideas for inventions is stolen. The trio uses the inventions they have already made in an effort to get the notebook back from the unimaginative adult scientist who took it to steal their inspiration. Starring a spirited girl, a nerdy boy, and a jock, there is something in this bright, entertaining graphic novel for everyone. Great fun.
